History of the School

In 1899, Edmond Demolins, inspired by the British “new schools” model and their innovative methods, founded the École des Roches in France. He applied the values of observation, experimentation and active teaching in a balanced family environment.

Edmond Demolins, founder of the École des Roches

Edmond Demolins (1852-1907), a pedagogue and sociologist, was a precursor of the new education. Inspired by Frédéric Le Play and the English schools, he advocated a practical education geared towards autonomy. In 1899, he founded the École des Roches, revolutionising education in France. His innovative model left a lasting mark on the history of national education.

Georges Bertier: the architect of visionary education

Georges Bertier restructured the organisation of the École des Roches into three educational cycles:

The programme focuses on core subjects such as French, Latin and mathematics. The mornings are devoted to intellectual subjects, while the afternoons alternate between manual activities, sports and excursions. Sunday is the only day off.
